Participating in the AMSA Exchange Program in Japan was truly one of the most unforgettable and enriching experiences of my life. It was incredible to see how organized, efficient and technology-driven their healthcare system is, yet still deeply rooted in compassion and respect for patients.
During the exchange, I joined hospital and university tours, attended lectures, and discussed clinical cases with Japanese students and doctors. One of the most exciting parts was watching a live surgery and stepping inside a forensic lab. Observing advanced equipment in action and directly engaging with the doctors was a rare and valuable opportunity. Seeing how Japan organizes its blood donation system helped me understand the gaps and differences compared to the system in Indonesia, especially regarding efficiency and accessibility. It made me realize how much we can improve through innovation and discipline.
Beyond the academic experience, the cultural part of the program was just as meaningful. We had the chance to wear yukata, try all kinds of Japanese food, and visit beautiful historical places such as temples and shrines. These experiences helped me understand how Japanese culture influences their approach to health, community, and everyday life.
What I appreciated most from this exchange were the connections I made. Although there were language and cultural differences, our shared passion for medicine helped us build a strong bond. The warmth and support of the Japanese committee played a big role in making this experience truly special. They made us feel welcomed and helped create memories that I will never forget. This experience encouraged me to think beyond borders and dream bigger about becoming a globally minded healthcare professional. I hope to carry these lessons into my future career and continue finding ways to collaborate internationally in medicine.
